The Mayor of Greater Manchester and Night Time Economy Adviser for Greater Manchester, Sacha Lord, committed to launching an Anti-Spiking Partnership after meeting with members of the Manchester Night In campaign. This followed a protest which took place where hundreds of people attended to take their stance against drinks spiking.

A huge installation of Boris Johnson, created using hundreds of recycled t-shirts, was displayed at Manchester Art Fair. The imposing 30-metre image, known as ‘#wakeupborisblanket’, aimed to challenge the Prime Minister to address the 206 tonnes of textile waste produced in the UK every year.

Midwives, birth workers and families from Manchester joined a nationwide protest by holding a vigil. March for Midwives UK, the national group who have arranged the protests, is a grassroots movement who in their manifesto state that a recent study found a staggering ‘60% of staff are thinking of leaving the profession’ and that ‘for every 30 newly qualified midwives, 29 are leaving’.

Manchester United announced  that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has left his role as manager and was be replaced in the interim by Michael Carrick. Carrick himself would leave the club when new boss Ralf Rangnick was confirmed to be taking over until the end of the season with plans to move him upstairs when a permanent boss is hired in the summer.

In two unrelated incidents, employees of the bus operator Stagecoach Manchester, heroically saved the lives of two passengers at Ashton Interchange and Manchester Piccadilly. Both employees were awarded the accolade of Star of the Month at Stagecoach in recognition of their life-saving actions.

Following the success of Poppies: Wave and Weeping Window, which toured to IWM London and IWM North in 2018 to mark the end of the First World War centenary, the iconic sculptures were combined and returned to IWM North, where they were on permanent display as part of a brand new artwork. Poppies were a familiar sight on the battlefields of the Western Front, where they flourished in the devastated landscape.

Tributes were paid to a serving British Transport police officer of 20 years who died following medical complications. “Jane was based in Manchester and had over twenty years of distinguished service within British Transport Police, which included being one of the first on scene at the Arena bombing in May 2017.”

A football fan who live streamed himself on Facebook racially abusing three England players  Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, who missed penalties in the shootout against Italy was jailed.

Netflix surprised Squid Game by bringing a replica of the show’s iconic animatronic doll to the Trafford Centre. Fans were offered the chance to capture photos and videos of the doll in action, and an opportunity to interact with Squid Game costumed guards. Complementary circular cookies, carved with different shapes from the series, were also be available.
