Manchester’s own independent R&B songstress Prima has returned with her first release of the year, a stunning four track EP titled Music To Break Up To, available now on Bandcamp for just £5 ahead of its full release on all platforms from Friday 28th April, 2023.

Prima will also be holding an official EP launch party at Off The Square, Northern Quarter on Saturday 29th April featuring performances from Manchester’s finest R&B talent with a stellar line-up including Prido, Via Luna, Mya, Meduulla, and of course Prima herself.

Music To Break Up To is a project that lives up to its name; an open, honest and completely relatable journey through the highs and lows of falling in and out of love. Something most of us will experience at least once in our lifetimes. From being completely head over heels, to seeing the cracks begin to show, and the walls slowly cave in, this is a musical reminder that all relationships are a work in progress and require a lot of effort and understanding.

From the beautifully simple Falling Apart, and the brutally honest Make Up Sex, to the tender and vulnerable Lifeboat featuring Manchester-based afrobeat artist Prido, and the genuine and conversational Break Up, the EP will help you see that sometimes relationships just don’t work out, no matter how much you want them to, but that every experience is an opportunity to learn and grow.

Recorded and released by Manchester’s Midication Recordings, with world-class production on every track by, rap and grime legend of the city and Prima’s fiancé, JSD, Music To Break Up To is coming in hot off the back of her 2022 album Scandalous and will, once again, see Prima’s soft and silky vocals deliver raw and gut-wrenchingly real lyrics that will dig deep into your soul and ignite introspection.

Prima comments: “I went into this project with an open mind, writing from the perspective of myself and my own relationship as well as drawing on my past and the varied experiences of people I know. I really wanted to touch on every aspect of the human experience when it comes to falling in and out of love, so when you listen to all four songs back to back, there is a clear underlying story of someone who was madly in love at the start of a relationship before gradually becoming disconnected.

“I think it is something we’ve all been through at some point in our lives. I just love the vulnerability and honesty in this project and I feel like it’s a stepping stone to the most intimate parts of myself.”

JSD comments: “We’ve really honed in on Prima’s style for this project and created a 3D soundscape of big atmosphere and lush melodies as a backdrop for her to shine on. It’s engaging and immersive. Her writing is so strong and she knows exactly what she wants to say. She knows herself. And that’s important for an artist; to really know yourself and be at peace with your flaws and imperfections.

“Great artists tell stories and communicate feelings and emotions in a way that other people can’t. From a production standpoint I just tried to really zone in to P and the kind of vibe I know she’s drawn to. I wanted to channel her through the music, and I think we’ve built something really special.”

Prima is at the forefront of the Manchester R&B movement; she joined Midication in the label’s very early days and has since been making huge waves with tracks featuring on PrettyLittleThing’s (PLT) ad campaigns with Molly-Mae Hague and Tamara Francesconi, as well as filming a day-in-the-life documentary for the brand in 2022.

She has amassed hundreds of thousands of streams on Spotify and the Manchester singer has also performed on the BBC Music Introducing stage at Reading and Leeds Festival, been playlisted by Rinse FM, and has seen the music video for her track 100 premiere on Earmilk, as well as an artist feature on DJ Ace’s BBC Radio 1 Xtra show, and one of her songs being handed the ‘Track of the Week’ title on BBC Radio 1.

Over the last decade Midication Recordings has developed a core stable of Manchester artists as a result of JSD producing and engineering for local talent and organically developing a talented roster into a family of some of the city’s best rappers and singers.

With a recording studio based between the City Centre and Cheetham Hill, JSD supports a thriving community of talented musicians; he co-writes, produces, mixes and masters for Midication artists, and has produced for many renowned artists across the UK.
