Reach Out;START to End Suicide’ ‘World Suicide Prevention Day Vigil & Procession of Remembrance’ will gather at the START’s Wellbeing Centre to honour lives lost to suicide and support those affected by these tragedies. This year’s event highlights the alarming rates of suicide among the homeless community, with 13.4% of homeless deaths in 2021 attributed to suicide (ONS).

Streetwise Opera, which uses music to enable individuals affected by homelessness to find inspiration and empowerment, shared the importance of such events.
“By performing at the Vigil, we raise our voices to honour the lives lost and to offer solidarity to those grieving. It’s a powerful reminder that we all have a role in supporting each other,” said Rey Trombetta, Head of Communications for Streetwise Opera.

Jenni Smith from Loaves & Fishes highlighted the broader impact of homelessness and the critical support needed: “In these challenging times, even families and children are at risk. It’s not just about providing shelter, but also addressing food poverty and supporting mental health. Events like the Vigil are crucial in showing our collective support and breaking the silence around these issues.”

The Vigil will feature a procession with 144 yellow flags, each representing a life lost to suicide in Salford over the past five years. The procession will end at the Salford Museum & Art Gallery, where a series of heartfelt performances and speeches will take place, including those from local poet Andy Green and representatives from Salford Council and the NHS.

Participants are encouraged to reach out to START if they wish to include the name of a loved one in the remembrance roll, which will be read aloud during the Vigil. This event not only serves to remember those lost but also to provide a beacon of hope and support for those suffering in silence.

“Supporting each other, smashing the stigma, and loving each other—especially those grieving a loved one lost to suicide—is essential. Please, reach out to each other, whether you’re struggling yourself or notice someone you love going through a rough time,” urged Dennis Baldwin, Reach Out;START to End Suicide Project Manager.
