103-year-old May Thomas, who lives at De Brook Lodge care home in Flixton, visited The Church Inn recently – a pub which her family owned, and in which she was born in 1921.
Whilst enjoying one of the care home’s regular trishaw rides, organised with Cycling Without Age Trafford, May spotted her old family home and couldn’t wait to see how the place had changed.
May’s memories came flooding back when she stepped inside the pub, and she began to recall how the inn used to look when her family ran the business.
She announced to the pub-goers that she was born in the ‘back bedroom’, to which they applauded. May said,
‘This trip has brought back so many happy memories, I am over the moon to visit again. It’s a funny feeling, so much has changed. I was even married in the church next door, the wedding car just drove me around the block!’
May and her daughter were invited back to the Church Inn for a meal and a bottle of wine, which they enjoyed in celebration of her daughter’s 60thbirthday.
Alan Eyres, the Home Manager at De Brook Lodge, added, ‘Our residents have such rich histories in the local area, so to be able to reminisce with them about the happiest memories in their lives is a blessing.
‘May’s face lit up when she told everyone stories about growing up at the Church Inn, and we can’t thank the team at the pub enough for their kind invitation to have May and her daughter back for a meal.’

From 10:30 all are welcome to bring along their signature bakes to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Residents at De Brook Lodge will be taste testing the baked goods and choosing their winner.
