A group of young people in Bury enjoyed a holiday club with a difference, thanks to Create, the UK’s leading charity enhancing wellbeing through the arts.

Eleven young people took part in a three-day programme with Create’s professional, Salford-based artist Paul Pickford, sponsored by bakery brand Jacksons of Yorkshire.

The budding artists, aged between seven and ten, are all young carers. Create facilitated activities with Paul centred around model making, with participants designing characters, sets and even writing stories about their creations.

Nicky Goulder, CEO of Create explained: “It’s been a joy to work with Paul and our group of young carers in Bury. It’s been inspiring to see them grow in confidence, learn new skills, build relationships and – above all, have fun – during their time at the project. They’ve especially loved the model making and we hope they’ll cherish their creations for many years to come!”

Explaining more about Create’s work, Nicky continued: “Create is a national charity that brings the power of creativity to children and adults facing challenges in their lives. Each project is delivered by our professional Create artists, helping to connect, empower, inspire and upskill people who often miss out on opportunities to be creative, enhancing their wellbeing and self-esteem.”

Create’s project in Bury was facilitated in collaboration with Bury Young Carers and led by Paul Pickford, an award-winning visual artist based in Salford. Paul specialises in illustration, animation and visual narrative techniques. He’s run a variety of workshops with schools, children with special needs and community groups, with fun themes including monster design.

The sponsorship programme is part of Feeding Creativity, Jacksons of Yorkshire’s pledge to support all things creative. Working with Create, the bakery brand is supporting a programme of projects for young carers across the school holidays until the end of 2023. Jacksons’ Feeding Creativity loaves are on shelves in supermarkets now, giving brand fans the opportunity to win a family art trip to London, art kits for their local school, and more.
