Bury Council is appealing to residents to keep an eye out for three ornamental trees that were stolen from outside the town hall.

The distinctive conifers, in a spiral shape, were taken from floral beds at the register office entrance and from the other side of Manchester Road.

Passers-by took photos of the first theft, which took place on Friday evening (21 May), and it believed that the other two trees were taken at some point over the weekend.

The photo, along with CCTV footage nearby, shows a man riding a black mountain bike with white spokes on the front wheel bagging up the tree outside the register office.

A council spokesman said: “It’s a shame that some people think they can spoil it for everyone else by stealing or damaging things – property that is paid for, in the end, by local taxpayers. The gardens outside the register office, in particular, are very pretty and enjoyed by many people who get married here.

“If anyone has any information about these thefts, please call the council on 0161 253 5353.”
