Energy bills are set to rise again due to a spike in global gas markets, after wholesale gas prices have risen by 15% since the last energy price cap was announced.

The warning comes from the Energy Secretary Ed Miliband who says he has written to Ofgem urging them to use their powers to the maximum to protect consumers, and agreeing key areas where they will intensify efforts, from back billing to standing charges.

Gas prices are still around two times higher than before the Russian invasion of Ukraine and bills are expected to increase by around £9 a month when the next price cap is set

According to consultancy Cornwall Insight, when Ofgem announce the figure next week, a household using a typical amount of gas and electricity would pay £1,823 a year.
