Tributes have been paid to Claire Mooney  a local singer songwriter and activist who has died after a long and courageous battle against cancer

Brought up in Chorlton She was the first patron of Manchester Pride and in 2021 received the Lord Mayor of Manchester’s Special Recognition Award for her work with women and girls, workers’ rights and tackling homophobia in the city.

Claire has released seven albums of protest, pride and passion in a career that started in the 1980’s and performed across the UK and Ireland for over 40 years, with equality and diversity central to her work.

Claire’s songs spoke of injustice and peace, with topics including ending the abuse of women and girls, to ending stigma of HIV/Aids.Much of her work was inspired by Manchester’s radical past

Claire worked with groups in community settings to encourage others to use their voice and sing out about issues that affect them

Last year she joined the picket line outside The Christie Hospital with a sign that said “this cancer patient supports the nurses.”

Manchester Councillor Suzanne Richards wrote on X

“She was no ordinary rebel – we loved her we will miss her.”
