Police have broken up what appeared to be an illegal rave at Castlefield Bowl earlier this evening

A crowd estimated at over a 100 had gathered in the early evening according to reports before police appeared and eventually dispersed the gathering

“It’s been a long year, we are close to easing out of lockdown. We don’t want to blow it now. It’s not looking promising in France, a worrying 3rd wave. Have people just had enough?” was the reaction from one person on twitter

A spokesperson told Sky News: “Throughout Wednesday a number of officers were patrolling the Castlefield Arena area and were continually monitoring and engaging with groups of individuals to engage, explain and encourage compliance with the COVID rules and regulations.

“Into the evening the numbers of those in the area began to increase and music equipment was set up.

“As officers attempted to engage with a group at the scene they were met with hostility causing them to withdraw. Additional officers were subsequently deployed to the area and the gathering swiftly dispersed.
“No FPNs have been issued so far but enquiries are on-going to locate the organiser.

“Two men, aged 18, were arrested on suspicion of indecent exposure but later de-arrested. Enquiries remain ongoing.”

City Centre spokesman Councillor Pat Karney lamented the gathering, saying: “They think they are all immune and it’s all over.”

“They think they are immune and it’s all over. They may have older family members who know it’s not all over.

“We are going to see more of this in our parks and city centre spots. We need Greater Manchester Police to be on top of the social media that brings them together.

“Residents who are obeying Covid regulations will be disgusted at these raves and p— ups.”
