The tornado that hit parts of Tameside twelve months ago during Storm Gerrit was one of the widest to have hit the UK

An investigation by the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) released just before Xmas shows that the tornado which hit parts of Dukinfield, Stalybridge, Millbrook and Carrbrook on the 27th December said it is possible that the tornado was up to 1km wide at its widest location

”In several locations there was strong evidence to support the presence of sub-vortices within the tornado. perhaps as a multi-vortex tornado. It is also possible that some damage was due to straight-line winds. If the damage were all tornadic, this would make this the widest tornado ever recorded in the UK.” said the report adding that

”The intensity of the tornado is remarkable, given that it occurred in an environment characterized by a surface air temperature of 7–8°C and a surface dewpoint of 5–6°C,
