Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has told the Scottish people that ‘Whatever path we take it should be one decided by us, not for us.” as she announced plans for a new referendum on Independence in October 2023
However in a riposte to Boris Johnson he said that she will refer the plan to the Supreme Court to see if it’s legal first adding that if the court decides against her ability to hold a consultative referendum it will be the “fault of Westminster legislation.”
Her first step will be a consultative vote to “ascertain the views of the Scottish people.” She proposes it be the same question as 2014
If the courts block her path, Nicola Sturgeon says she will fight the next general election on a single policy: should Scotland be an independent country?
Much like the 2016 Brexit referendum, the vote will be consultative and politicians will then work to achieve independence if Scottish voters choose to leave the union, with Ms Sturgeon explaining: “For Scotland to become independent following a yes vote, legislation would have to be passed by the UK and Scottish Parliaments.”
The Scottish Tory leader, Douglas Ross, accused Nicola Sturgeon of planning an “illegal” referendum
