Sir Keir Starmer will face a vote on whether he should be referred to a parliamentary sleaze inquiry over the appointment of Lord Mandelson as US ambassador

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the Commons, is expected allow a debate and a vote tomorrow on whether to refer the prime minister to the privileges committee over claims he misled the House

Starmer has insisted due process was followed when he announced the appointment before vetting took place, saying he was backed up by the UK’s former top civil servant Sir Chris Wormald.

If the vote passed he will be investigated for potentially misleading Parliament

Tomorrow the PM will put more pressure on the Prime Minister as The Foreign Affairs Committee will hear from Sir Phillip Barton, who was the top official at the Foreign Office when Mandelson was picked, and from Starmer’s ex-chief of staff Morgan McSweeney.

A No 10 spokesperson said

“The government is engaging with the two parliamentary processes that are already running on Peter Mandelson’s appointment with full transparency.

“This is a desperate political stunt by the Conservative Party the week before the May elections because they have no answers on the cost of living or the NHS. Their claims have no substance.”
