If we don’t get this right our country will go down a very dark path.’

‘Just as I take responsibility for the results I also take responsibility for delivering the change we promised, for a fairer and stronger Britain ‘I take responsibility for navigating us through a world that is more dangerous than at any time in my life. And I take responsibility for not walking away. A Labour government would never be forgiven for inflicting that on our country again’

‘Andy Burnham decided to leave Parliament, to give up his seat. He went to Manchester, he made a series of commitments to Manchester ‘Whether he comes back or not is a matter for the NEC. Right now to suggest that the answer is to have another by election and then a mayoral election and then all the uncertainty that goes with it… my personal view is this is not the time for those sorts of actions and distractions’
