The row over Child Grooming Gangs continued during this lunchtime’s Prime Minister’s Questions

Tory leader Kemi Badenock called for a national inquiry into the Child Grooming Gangs. However the Prime Minister said that an new inquiry would take time and may not report until 2031 after the last inquiry took seven years

Launching into an attack on the opposition’s claims that it accepted 18 of the 20 recommendations made at the time by the Jay report, he reminded Badenoch that she was children’s minister, and women and equalities minister but could not recall her  ever raising this issue in the Commons addig that he thought that she did not raise it in eight years as an MP. He would withdraw that remark if he was wrong he added

Starmer accused the Tories of jumping on the bandwagon and said that slinging mud around did not help the situation

Badenoch said that if Starmer refused a new inquiry, people will think there is a cover-up.

Starmer urged Kemi Badenoch to withdraw her wrecking amendment on the Children’s Wellbeing Bill, which provides vital protections to vulnerable children also urging Tory MPs to ignore the “shortsighted, misguided bandwagon-jumping approach of the non-leadership of the leader of the opposition”. in this afternoon’s debate,“Tories cannot kill the government’s bill and protect children at the same time.“
