“The people of Greater Manchester are waking up to the prospect of even tougher restrictions,” said Greater Manchester’s Mayor Andy Burnham in a press conference along with Liverpool’s Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram

“We owe it to people to make what’s about to come to make it as effective and fair as it can be, we need to give them some hope there is light at the end of the tunnel.” he added while emphasising that work needs to begin tomorrow on Test and Trace.

The national system he said should only work on cases that can be easily contacted within a 24 hour period, the rest should be passed on to local teams who can have direct conversations with people to connect the system and make it work.

“Corrections have to made to a system that has been failing all year”

The Mayor said that ”I remain of the view the circuit break should be a true circuit break so we can reset things and get a proper grip of the virus,” Andy says.

“We do need to see a period of closure of schools. I would suggest a period of two weeks, towards the second half of November.”

More students here are being sent home, the level of disruption to education is higher here than other parts of the country,” said the Mayor adding

“We’re making a call for an assessment approach rather than an exam approach. We’re not just talking about GCSEs but A Levels too.”
