Salford MP Rebecca Long Bailey was among the fifteen Labour MP’s who rebelled against Keir Starmer and voted to refer him to the Privileges Committee
The Labour Leader won the vote by 335 votes to 223, a majority of 112 although a further 53 Labour MP’s did not vote though some will have been absent for Government business or been slipped by whips rather than due to abstentions
Earlier Long Bailey had told the BBC that she would struggle to vote against the referral saying that the Prime Minister should have nothing to fear in standing before the Privileges committee which would avoid the issue becoming a distraction around the local elections
She went on to say that
There’ll be a moment of reckoning after the local elections,” adding that her party needs to “recognise where we’ve gone wrong”
Following the vote A No10 spokesperson said
This Labour government is delivering for Britain including bringing down energy bills, cutting hospital waiting lists and lifting half a million children out of poverty.
“The Conservative Party resorted to this desperate political stunt the week before the May elections because they have no answers on the cost of living or the NHS.
“We will continue to engage with the two parliamentary processes that are running on Peter Mandelson’s appointment with full transparency.”
