A 23-year-old man was arrested after a police officer was attacked with a sword in Whalley Range yesterday afternoon.

In dramatic circumstances captured on video, several police officers were filmed trying to take down the man, who appeared to be carrying a sword, take down the man, using batons and tasers to get him to give up the weapon

The police officer has been discharged from hospital. He is now recovering at home.

In a statement released last night, ACC Russ Jackson of Greater Manchester Police said:

“Earlier today officers were called to an incident where a man was armed with a sword in the street on Demesne Road in Whalley Range, Manchester

“The officers deployed were confronted by an armed man and sadly a sergeant suffered injuries to his face and shoulder during the incident.

“He was taken to accident and emergency and thankfully he has now been released to recover at home with his family.

“The officers responded with immense bravery to this report and while the sergeant is making a good recovery, this was an incredibly nasty incident which could have been so much worse.

“Footage of the incident has been circulating in the media and consequently, with so many people now having seen the actions of the officers, we have received an overwhelming number of messages of support and best wishes for the officers involved.

“I want to thank those who have sent these good wishes, it means a lot to our colleagues to have this support. We feel proud protecting and serving the communities of Greater Manchester.”
