Plans to build 162 houses on 75 acres of Green Belt land within the Tame Valley – midway between Stalybridge and Mossley have been approved by Tameside Council but will need final signing off by the Government in the form of Tameside MP Angela Rayner

Casey Group first applied for planning permission in 2021

The site has been used for intense industrial uses since the early 19th Century.  The former (coal fired) Hartshead Power Station dominated the site until its closure in 1979 and it has lain derelict since the last structures were demolished in the 1980s.

Plans also include managi g the 55 acres of enhanced woodland, habitats, footpaths, and associated infrastructure, including a 1.3km stretch of Greater Manchester’s Bee Network (a safe and direct cycle route) through the site.

This will ensure that the scheme will generate a Biodiversity Net Gain of almost 25%.

The planning application also commits the group to making a financial contribution to improve connections to off-site pedestrian and cycle routes – including the Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath – between Stalybridge and Mossley.

The 162 generously proportioned semi-detached and detached 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom homes with distinctive materials and styles, car parking and private gardens.

The housing has been carefully positioned on land that was previously used for railway sidings and open storage to minimise the environmental and visual impact of the scheme.
