More than 100 Labour MPs including some from across Greater Manchester have signed a “reasoned amendment” seeking to thwart the government’s controversial welfare reform bill, in one of the most significant rebellions of Keir Starmer’s premiership to date.
Thirteen Labour committee chairs, led by veteran MP Meg Hillier, have put forward a reasoned amendment to the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill.
The MP’s Rebel MPs are calling for more consultation on the reforms, under which fewer people would be eligible for PIP and an extra £1 billion spent on getting people back to work.
Among those backing the amendments are Saddleworth’ Deborah Abrahams,Kirith Entwhistle who represents Bolton NE, Salford’s Rebecca Long Bailey, Navendru Mishra from Stockport, Leigh’s Jo Platt and Yasmin Qureshi from Bolton South and Walkden
