Nexus House is home to GMP’s Modern Slavery Team. Initially established in 2015 as the Modern Slavery Coordination Unit, the unit has expanded and now advises and supports district and centrally-led investigations across Greater Manchester to ensure the best possible outcomes for those affected.

The team also comprises the Modern Slavery Investigate Unit, which was nationally recognised by the Anti-Slavery Commissioner in 2021.

In 2022, the Modern Slavery Team assisted with: visits to 29 premises; arrests of 33 suspects; and referrals of 11 victims to specialist services. The team also supported 73 force wide enquiries and took the lead on 48 criminal investigations.

The MST has trained over 36 Modern Slavery Tactical Advisors and 110 Victim Liaison Officers to improve the force’s response to allegations and investigation of crimes, alongside delivering inputs to over 4800 partners and members of the public to raise awareness and encourage reporting.

Detective Superintendent John Griffith, of GMP’s Serious Crime Division, said: “Greater Manchester Police is committed to delivering outstanding service which cares for victims and keeps them safe. In respect of modern slavery, significant progress has been made against this since the Modern Slavery Coordination Unit was established in 2015.

“The current team is invaluably supported by resources from across Greater Manchester Police and partner agencies. A refreshed force wide policy has been recently published and promoted to ensure we are consistently safeguarding victims and bringing offenders to justice.
