Skateboarders, BMX, and scooter riders in Gatley are off to a flying start in 2023 with a new skatepark opening in Gatley Recreation Park.

The new sports facility, that cost £75,700, is constructed from sprayed concrete and designed to complement the site. The park has many great ride features including a quarter pipe and extended quarter pipe, a spine a wallride bank and grind ledge

The design and build works for the Gatley skatepark were part of the funding for sport from recent developments in the area.

This is only part of the picture for wheeled sports in Stockport, with a second ramp under construction in Torkington Park, which is a further £93,000 investment. Skateboarding has seen a spike in popularity after it became an Olympic sport and Team GB athlete Sky Brown won a historic bronze medal at the Tokyo Games – aged just 13.

Councillor Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Highways, Parks and Leisure Services said: “The new skatepark will allow more people to get active and enjoy their local park in a new and exciting way. We want to provide as many opportunities to residents as possible to move in a way that suits them. There are more improvements ahead as we work with the local community group, Bike Brabyns, to improve the BMX track at Brabyns Park.”
