A new exhibition opening this week at Manchester’s Craft and Design Centre this week will celebrate the building’s 150th Anniversary.
The ceramic artist Anna Collette Hunt has created a collection of Entomagical insects to reflect the hive mentality of the Centre and our city.
Frozen in time, these reimagined insects connect with our building’s Victorian past and Manchester’s worker bee mindset.
The building first opened its doors in 1873 and was part of the bustling Smithfield Markets.
The majority of the markets were demolished in 1978 and the remaining disused retail fish market was converted into Manchester Craft Village in 1982. It has been home to a creative community of makers ever since.
The mystery and wonder of the natural world and the curious order of insects are the focus of Anna’s work. Many of our talented team of makers also look towards nature for inspiration and find a deep connection with our environment.
Immersed in making, Manchester Craft and Design Centre has been a creative space for local makers and visitors to connect. We are proud to be able to celebrate the building’s rich heritage and its future as a hive of creative activity.
