A new multi-million pound sports and leisure centre has been officially opened in Brinnington with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday 2nd March.

Cllr Sheila Bailey, Stockport Council’s Cabinet for Communities and Housing, alongside local ward councillors and representatives from developer Willmott Dixon and Life Leisure, attended the official opening, followed by a guided tour of the facilities.

The £7m Brinnington Park Leisure Complex, developed through investment from Stockport Council, will be operated by Life Leisure, replacing the old Lapwing facility which has closed its doors for the last time in late February.

Facilities in the new centre include a gym equipped with cutting edge fitness equipment, aerobics studio with weekly programme of classes, community room, boxing gym, a four court sports hall and an outdoor 3G football pitch.

In addition to general gym training and studio classes the centre will provide a weekly programme of activities and will be home to numerous local sports clubs.

Cllr Sheila Bailey said: “I’m thrilled with the new leisure complex in Brinnington and I’m positive that local people will be able to enjoy high quality and affordable facilities. I’d like to thank the local ward councillors, Council officers and partners for remaining focussed and persistent on delivering Brinnington’s master plan and subsequent regeneration – this will enhance an already great community and place to live.”

Malcolm McPhail, CEO at Life Leisure, said; “The Brinnington Park Leisure Complex will be a destination facility for the area – providing much needed career, leisure, health and wellbeing opportunities. We hope that our integration into Brinnington and our provision of state-of-the-art facilities will encourage residents to become more active.”

Anthony Dillon, Managing Director at Willmott Dixon, said: “We’re delighted to have delivered this fantastic facility both on programme and on budget, it is a great team achievement. Not only will it be a great community asset supporting the health, wellbeing, leisure and sporting agenda but we have maximised the local benefits during construction, such as the use of local companies and engaging with local schools to promote careers available in the industry.”
