Manchester City Council has granted planning approval for a new 172 bed hotel in the city’s New Cross area. HOW Planning submitted the outline planning application on behalf of Axel Hospitality earlier this year and the decision paves the way for a new AC by Marriott hotel.

The scheme is located on Cable Street in Ancoats, close to the Northern Quarter, and has been designed by Simpson Haugh & Partners.

The New Cross area has been identified by Manchester City Council for major regeneration and the new hotel development, which will also include a café bar, fitness centre and meeting rooms, will transform what is currently a vacant, brownfield site. The development will also include a café bar, fitness centre and meeting rooms.

Comments Conor Vallelly, Associate at HOW Planning: “The New Cross Development Framework aims to bring development forward in the area to provide a vibrant, distinctive and accessible new destination where people want to live, work and socialise. The expansion of the city centre boundary to include areas such as New Cross is vital in terms of delivering upon the city’s growth objectives for residential, commercial and population growth and approval of this scheme is one of the first steps taken to achieving this aim.”

The new hotel will be a nine storey development covering an area of 7,785 sq m. The front entrance, and centralised core, will be emphasised through a vertical glazed section which will occupy the full height of the building and provide a striking entrance to the building.
