Net migration to UK stands at over 900,000 in year to June 2023.

It is the Highest annual total on record and much higher than previous estimate of 700,000

In the year to June 2024, it fell down to 728,000 in figures released this morning

The figures say that in the 12 months to June 2024, some 1.2 million people are estimated to have arrived in the UK, while 479,000 are likely to have left.

1.3 million arrived in the UK in the year to June 2023 and 414,000 left.

The drop in net migration took place after rule changes were implemented by the last Conservative government.

The Office of Budget Responsibility forecasts that net migration will fall from to 300,000 in the next four years.

In a speech this afternoon Prime Minister Sir Kier Starmer commenting on the figures said

This happened by design, not by accident. Brexit was used as an excuse to turn Britain into a one-nation experiment in open borders.”

Starmer promised that the Government would publish a White Paper imminently which sets out a plan to reduce immigration

“It won’t be quick or easy, but we are going to turn things around,”

Keir Starmer also said his government will focus on training to plug the skills gap as he vows to lower immigration.

”I do think it’s right that we should ensure that we have the skills and training for people in this country for the jobs that we need’
