Wigan MP and Shadow Levelling up spokesperson Lisa Nandy today vowed to mend the deliberate vandalism of our social housing in a speech to the Labour Party Conference in Liverpool this afternoon
Accusing the Tories of turning housing into a racket, incentivising speculation and profiteering while millions languish on waiting lists
Council housing she said was not a dirty word. The party’s mantra would be council housing, council housing, council housing
“We’re going to rebuild our social housing stock and bring homes back into the ownership of local councils and communities. With home ownership opened up to millions more.“
Nandy also promised powerful new renters charter for people renting in the private sector
Meanwhile in an interview with the Guardian ahead of the speech, she said that levelling up was dead under the Tories and that Labour would come back to finish the job
She revealed that the former Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane, who was previously tasked by Michael Gove to develop his levelling up strategy is working with Nandy on the party’s strategy for regional growth.
In her speech she hit out at the abolishing 45% tax cut awhile people can’t afford to pay their rent, feed their kids and heat their homes.
“More money for millionaires than the whole North of England. In the words of Liz Truss – that .is.a.digrace.”
