The Culture Secretary and Greater Manchester MP Lisa Nandy has said that Andy Burnham should be allowed back into Westminster
In an interview with the House Magazine she said that the Mayor of Greater Manchester should be free to run for a seat at Westminster because he was a “huge asset” to the Labour Party and that she would back him running for Parliament in future.
She added that she would have voted for Mr Burnham to stand if she had been given a say on the National Executive when a vote was taken over his standing at the Gorton and Denton by election
“I think it is right that members are allowed to make their own choices about who they want to be their candidates in elections. I’ve always thought that right,” she said.
“And while I respect the views of colleagues on the National Executive Committee, had I been sitting in that seat – is that what you’re asking me, what I would have voted? Yeah, I would have voted to allow him to stand, as Lucy did.”
