MPs have approved amendments to the assisted dying bill which would allow healthcare professionals to opt out of providing an assisted death.

The bill had its report stage in the House of Commons today, and there will be more debate and votes on 13 June as it continues its passage through Parliament

MPs have complained about not being given enough time to debate the bill with only two amendments voted on today

Many MP’s are said to be deeply uncomfortable with the Bill with some describing the process itself has been shambolic.

”In a context where disabled people are being deprived of crucial supports, the NHS being hit with funding cuts and the pretence of “safeguards” being dropped resulting in a law where 18 year olds can be approached to actively consider ending their life” said one MP

Meanwhile Esther Rantzen inflamed tensions further with a letter published this morning in which she urged MPs to back the bill and then suggested that those who were against it had ‘undeclared personal religious beliefs which mean no precautions would satisfy them’
