Settlement, a brand new temporary work by British sculptor and environmental artist Rob Mulholland has opened in Heysham Barrows last weekend.

Featuring a series of five permanent and temporary art public art works have been commissioned, all inspired by Morecambe Bay, the epic coastal views, sense of spiritual significance, the vast grandeur of the Bay, internationally significant populations of birds and flora, the rhythms of the tide and how man’s work has shaped the land and coast through fishing, seafaring, trade and farming.

Six mirrored figures reflect upon the idea of sites of human settlement, reminding the viewer of the generations working the land and the sea in centuries gone by.

The ambiguity of the mirrored forms and utilisation of unconventional materials will enhance the visual experiences and allow the viewers to see the environment in a new and exciting way, literally reflecting the landscapes they see around them. The landscape will alter and distort, appearing and disappearing as the viewer passes, a vestige or trace of the past, a reminder of those who have walked these places before.
