Members of the drivers’ union Aslef are set to inflict more misery on commuters when at 15 train companies they will walk out on Thursday, January 5, after 93pc of members who voted backed more industrial action in the long-running dispute over pay.

Aslef boss Mick Whelan said: “The train companies say their hands have been tied by the government. While the government – which does not employ us – says it’s up to the companies to negotiate with us.”

The action will affect services on Avanti West Coast,Northern and Transpennine Express

Members of the RMT Union are planning to strike on January 3, 4, 6 and 7, meaning services will be crippled for a week.
