Lifeshare – Manchester’s oldest homelessness charity – is preparing to open its doors for the 31st consecutive Christmas, as demand for its services expected to reach unprecedented levels.
From December 19th to 28th, the charity will open the Mosaic Wellbeing Hub on Dale Street to offer hot meals, companionship, showers, health support and clothing to homeless and vulnerable people from across the city.
Since opening its first Christmas project in 1994, Lifeshare has provided an estimated 160,000 Christmas dinners to people experiencing homelessness across Manchester and Salford. This year, the charity is expecting to serve up to 4,000 meals – a significant jump from the 3,000+ meals served in 2024.
The charity has worked throughout the year to raise funds for the Christmas project and most recently launched a limited-edition Christmas apron designed by Anthony, a former Lifeshare service user.
Yet with the cost-of-living crisis continuing to impact Manchester’s most vulnerable residents, the charity is now calling on the public to help fund this vital support over the festive period.
Jimmy Dunn, respite coordinator at Lifeshare, said: “With increasing prices for essentials continuing to bite, demand for our services is at an all-time high – especially during the festive season, when many of Manchester’s most vulnerable face increased financial pressures and isolation. We are here for anyone who needs a hot meal and a friendly face in what can be an extremely challenging time for many – no questions asked.
“With the help of our amazing volunteers – who basically keep us going and are giving up their own Christmases to support those in need – we hope our Christmas Project will provide a little light, warmth and much-needed comfort this festive season.
“The cost of providing a single Christmas meal – including hot food, clothing, showers, and support – is £11.50 this year. If you’re able to donate, even the cost of one meal makes a genuine difference to someone who needs it.”
