The lawyer of a man who was stamped on kicked in the head by a GMP officer has give a statement to the media outside Rochdale Police Station.

He told the press that he was there to make a formal complaint of assault and wounding against the police officers’

Akhmed Yakoob has said that the two men seen in the video are brothers and have an older brother serving in Greater Manchester Police

One of the brothers’ condition has deteriorated he told the assembled press and has a cyst on the brain and is in hospital

Earlier Mayor Andy Burnham told the BBC  that he had seen more footage of events leading up to the incident, which he said showed it was “not a clear-cut situation” and there were “issues for both sides”.

He said there was an issue on a flight landing at the airport and an “altercation” in the arrivals hall, which escalated “very quickly”.

A police spokesman also told the BBC that firearms officers had been punched to the ground while trying to make an arrest following a fight in the airport.

Meanwhile Rochdale’s MP Paul Waugh has spoken to the family involved in the incident at Manchester Airport on Tuesday night, and says it is clear they are deeply traumatised by what happened.

“The family, who are my constituents in Rochdale, have two priorities. The first and most immediate priority is the health and wellbeing of their family members, including their mother.

Their second priority is the need for justice to be done and seen to be done.

But the family also want me to make it crystal clear that they have no political agenda, do not condone political violence, and do not want to take part in any protests.

They wanted me to appeal for calm and I hope that appeal is heeded.

And while there is clearly deep concern about this incident, there is also a vital need not to let extremists of any kind hijack these events for their own ends.

The family have told me they certainly do not want to become the centre of a media circus either. They want the privacy and time to allow them to heal, physically and mentally.

This is a hard working Rochdale family, some of whose members are police officers themselves and are therefore particularly shocked at what they have witnessed.”
