The Health Secretary Wes Streeting has announced that the major rebuilding project of North Manchester Hospital which was in doubt will go ahead
Boris Johnson promised to build 40 new hospitals by 2030, but Labour has paused the projects saying it was “unrealistic and unaffordable”.
Speaking in the Commons Streeting said of Boris Johnson’s original announcement of 40 new hospital he said that
‘Five years passed, start dates were delayed, spades remained out of the ground, it became clear the announcement was a work of fiction.’
However several of the ’40 new hospitals’ projects won’t start work till at least 2035
These include projects in north west London, North Devon, East Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Lancashire and Nottingham
Commenting on the announcement Manchester Council Leader Bev Craig wrote on X
Great to see Secretary of State Wes Streeting announce the rebuild of North Manchester General Hospital in the most urgent phase.
North Manchester desperately needs investment and our residents deserve the best the NHS has to offer, it will also spearhead ambitious regeneration
Streeting added
”Working closely with the Chief Secretary to the Treasury (Darren Jones), we have secured five-year waves of investment backed by £15 billion of investment over consecutive waves averaging £3 billion a year. This funding is in addition to the £1 billion the Chancellor (Rachel Reeves) announced at the budget to tackle dangerous Raac and the backlog of critical maintenance, repairs and upgrades across the NHS estate, and it is in addition to the £1.5 billion we are investing in new surgical hubs, diagnostic scanners and beds.”
