The Liberal Democrats have launched a shocking new poster campaign with a stark warning to voters and politicians alike.
The new campaign from the pro-European party parodies the famous “Careless Talk Costs Lives” World War Two poster.
In the updated version from the Lib Dems, it warns that “Careless Votes Cost Lives”.
The original poster was part of a major propaganda campaign by the British government during the Second World War.
It discouraged talking about sensitive material where spies could overhear it, showing either Nazi eavesdroppers or depicting a death caused by leaked information.
During a week of immense political uncertainty, the Lib Dems have parked their tanks firmly on Labour’s lawns, and copied the iconic poster using almost identical imagery.
The poster replaces the two gossiping diners in the original design with Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn, both of whom the Lib Dems claim have worked together to deliver Brexit.
The poster’s warning, “Careless Votes Cost Lives”, sits below the two politicians enjoying a cosy dinner.
A quote from the pair reads, “…thanks for your help comrade, we finally got Brexit over the line!”
Analysis of voting records revealed that Corbyn ordered his MPs to abstain or vote with the Tory government on more than 30 key Brexit votes.
To highlight this, the pro-European party are launching a city-wide poster campaign warning that ‘careless votes’ for Labour, as well as the Conservatives, are helping deliver Brexit.
Angela Smith MP, who recently defected from Labour, joined Manchester Lib Dem leader John Leech and North West MEPs Jane Brophy and Chris Davies to reveal the posters at Central Library today.
The senior Lib Dems slammed Labour for backing Brexit more than 30 times in Parliament.
Doubling down on the poster’s message, the Lib Dems said voters and politicians should think carefully about how they vote in the coming months, warning of “careless votes facilitating a Brexit disaster.”
Liberal Democrat MP Angela Smith said:
“Labour have voted with the Tories more than 30 times to deliver Brexit. They do not want to stop Brexit, so do not waste your vote on them.
“Only the Liberal Democrats have been crystal clear on Brexit. We will do anything we can to stop Brexit including revoking Article 50 on day one of a Lib Dem majority government.
“It’s what’s right for the North, and it’s what’s right for the country.”
John Leech added:
“On more than 30 occasions, Corbyn has ordered his MPs to vote with the Conservatives to deliver Brexit.
“Johnson’s deal is even worse than Theresa May’s, and yet Labour MPs are still lining up to vote for it.
“There can be no coming back from that, and both MPs and voters must recognise the repercussions of their votes.
“If you are happy with Brexit destroying our NHS, crashing our economy and wiping out millions of jobs, then vote for Labour and the Conservatives.
“But do so knowing that Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn will use your vote as a mandate to deliver exactly that – no matter the consequences to you and your family.
“Only the Liberal Democrats are determined to stop Brexit, no matter what. Lib Dems will fight until the very bitter end if we have to.”
The poster will be plastered on billboards, as well as taking up full-page adverts in newspapers and roaming digital ad-vans.
Last week, the Lib Dems gatecrashed Jeremy Corbyn’s rally in Liverpool with a van circling the venue with an electronic billboard carrying the slogan: ‘You can’t stop Tory Brexit with Labour Brexit. Only Lib Dems will stop Brexit.’
