The King and the Queen Consort have departed Belfast City Airport and are returning to London ahead of the arrival of the Queen’s coffin in the capital later this evening
Earlier the Lord Lieutenant of Belfast Fionnuala Jay-O’Boyle greeted Charles as he arrived at Belfast City Airport in Northern Ireland
Addressing politicians at Hillsborough Castle, the King said he would follow the late Queen’s “shining example”, adding: “With God’s help, I take up my new duties resolved to seek the welfare of all the inhabitants of Northern Ireland.”
King Charles III also described how his family have felt their “sorrows” as he praised his mother’s relationship with Northern Ireland
He shook hands with the President of Ireland Michael D Higgins following a memorial service for the late Queen at St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast
