English Heritage said experts were assessing the “extent of the damage” to Stonehenge after they it was sprayed with orange paint on by Just Stop Oil activists

Activists from the Just Stop Oil group targeted the prehistoric megalithic structure to demand the UK ends the use of fossil fuels by 2030.

Wiltshire Police arrested two people on suspicion of damaging the ancient monument. A member of the public attempted to grapple with the protesters in a vain attempt to prevent the damage

A spokesman for Just Stop Oil said

“The orange cornflour we used will soon wash away with the rain, but the urgent need for effective government action to mitigate the catastrophic consequences of the climate and ecological crisis will not.”

Rishi Sunak in a statement said

This is a disgraceful act of vandalism to one of the UK’s and the world’s oldest and most important monuments. Just Stop Oil should be ashamed of their activists, and they and anyone associated with them, including a certain Labour Party donor, should issue a condemnation of this shameful act immediately.”
