The country must learn to live with Covid and Plan B is the right approach in tackling the current Omicron crisis
Boris Johnson joined by Prof Sir Chris Whitty, the government’s chief medical adviser, and Sir Patrick Vallance, its chief scientific adviser said at the Downing Street Press Conference that we have a chance to ride out this Omicron wave without shutting down the country again but the weeks ahead will be difficult.
Now is the time for “utmost caution” – and anyone who thinks the battle with Covid is over is “profoundly wrong” the Prime Minister said
Johnson said that he will be recommending to the cabinet tomorrow that we continue with Plan B.
The freedoms we have today are thanks to the booster campaign but 9 million eligible people have not have their booster he added quoting the fact that 61 per cent of people in hospital ICU units had not been vaccinated.
The Prime Minister also announced that there will be 100,000 daily tests for priority workers to keep the country running during the next few weeks.
Earlier the Health Secretary , Sajid Javid during a visit to a vaccination centre in London said:
“There’s nothing in data at this point that suggests that we need to move away from Plan B.
“I think Plan B, implementing that, has been the right approach and also being absolutely focused on the vaccination programme.”
He added that “getting to over 75% of eligible adults getting boosted is fantastic” but insisted “we still need to get through to that other 25% and that can really make a difference in how this country gets through this pandemic”.
