Manchester really is a city that has it all, from arts and culture to sports. While it’s the perfect city to enjoy a staycation in, the frequently dreary weather has us longing for sunnier climes from time to time. Long-haul flights to far-flung destinations admittedly aren’t within everyone’s reach this summer, but city breaks shouldn’t break the budget.

When it comes to a city break, there’s only one continent we want to head to, and that’s Europe. You could say that the continent was made for weekend trips, with each country offering a diverse array of fun, frolics and fine weather (for the most part!). The only question is, where should you go? Old favourites like Rome, Paris and Venice still have plenty of appeal, but there are other destinations that are perfect for a 3-day getaway.

Porto

Located in the north of Portugal, Porto is a city that will enchant you with its charm and romance. Sitting on the Duoro River and boasting some of the most beautiful architecture in Europe, Porto is a destination that is both tranquil and lively.

The city is known for its wine culture, with its port wine being produced in the Douro Valley before being transported down the river to age in Porto’s numerous wine cellars. Another must-visit attraction is the Livraria Lello, which is a picturesque bookstore rumoured to have been one of the creative inspirations behind J.K Rowling’s phenomenally popular Harry Potter series.

When it comes to exploring Porto, there’s plenty to see and experience. Head to the Ribeira, the historic centre of the city that is also a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its winding streets and narrow alleys will transport you to another time. When the night falls, the Galerias de Paris is the place to be.

Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo is known for being one of the most glamorous resorts on the Mediterranean coastline, but did you know that it has a long-standing connection with the game of poker? The city houses the legendary Casino de Monte Carlo, which opened its doors in 1863 and quickly became a hub for the European elite. Today, it’s a must-visit destination for anyone with an interest in card games, as much as it is a magnet for those seeking a little luxury when they travel.

Poker has been a popular game at the casino for decades, with some of the biggest tournaments in the world taking place there, including the World Series of Poker and the European Poker Tour. For things to do during your stay, why not join the EPT pros in the most exciting activities the city has to offer? From helicopter tours to supercar rides, there are plenty of high-octane adventures to be found for those seeking an adrenaline hit.

If you prefer something a bit more sedate, head on a guided tour to the opulent Prince’s Palace — the ancestral seat of the ruling Grimaldi family — or take in the lush grounds of the Casino de Monte Carlo itself.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a city that needs no introduction; its canals, museums, and coffee shops have made it one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Plus, the city’s relaxed approach to life and open-minded attitude make it an easy destination for a city break.

There is so much culture to absorb in Amsterdam that you could easily spend a longer trip here. One must-see is the Rijksmuseum, which houses a truly stunning collection of works by Old Dutch Masters as well as numerous artefacts. Head here if you’d love nothing more than to gaze in wonder at works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh.

Of course, a trip to Amsterdam wouldn’t be complete without leisurely exploring its numerous waterways. A canal tour is a perfect way to see the city from another perspective and take in all the sights. Did you know that Amsterdam’s canals are officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site? Alternatively, if you’d prefer to take a more active approach, then why not rent a bike and check out the city like a local?
