A human rights organisation has expressed concerns about the death of a Rochdale man who collapsed at an airport in Malaysia

In a statement Suara Rakyat Malaysia said that it expressed deep concern over the police custodial death of Callum Luxton during the documentation process at Kuala Lumpur Terminal 1 in November

The group said that Callum’s sudden collapse during the documentation process raises serious questions about the circumstances leading to his death.

Crucially, neither the police nor Callum’s family have disclosed any pre-existing health conditions that might explain his collapse, suggesting the possibility of unwarranted injuries sustained during custody.

The police claimed that Callum resisted arrest, yet there has been no explanation as to whether the use of force applied during his detention was proportionate or justified, nor has there been any mention of injuries, particularly head trauma, that he may have sustained.

Callum who comes from Whitworth was travelling to Phuket in Thailand and was changing planes

“The two-day delay between Callum’s death on November 23 and its public disclosure on November 25 raises significant concerns about transparency. Compounding this, more than a week after the initial announcement, there have been no meaningful updates on the progress of investigations, with the family receiving no clear information about the circumstances of Callum’s death or investigative findings“

The New Straits Times reported Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan as saying: “Around 1.30pm, police arrested the suspect, who was travelling from the United Kingdom to Phuket, Thailand, with a transit stop at KLIA Terminal 1. He had behaved aggressively and disrupted the peace there.

“When police attempted to detain him, the suspect resisted, injuring two policemen and an auxiliary officer, and damaging police equipment. During the documentation process, the suspect lost consciousness, prompting officers to call the KLIA medical team. A doctor administered first aid, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.”
