Electric vehicle drivers will be hit with a new pay-per-mile tax according to reports this morning
The Telegraph says that Electric car drivers will be charged an extra 3p per mile under plans to be announced in the Budget on the 26th November
The move comes as more drivers switch to electric cars reducing the amount of revenue the Government receives from fuel duty on petrol
The scheme is set to begin from 2028 after a consultation and will mean the average driver faces paying an extra £250 a year.
A trip from Manchester to London would cost £6.20 under the scheme which would be aligned to the annual payment of vehicle excise duty
Drivers would on an annual basis estimate their yearly mileage and pay a fee in advance in the current plan at 3p per mile.
If they don’t reach the estimated mikes, the money would carry over into the next year and if they exceeded they would top up their mileage charge at the end of the year
More than half the cars sold in U.K. in October were electrified and of that, over one quarter were pure EV
Hybrid drivers would under the scheme pay a smaller charge per mile
