A GMP officer is to appear in court tomorrow charged with causing death by dangerous driving following the death of a woman in Royton in December 2022 two days before Christmas

53 year old Helen Smedley was killed when unmarked police car, which had been in pursuit of an Audi A3 that officers believed to be stolen, collided with a Peugeot 108 at the junction of Oldham Road and Otmoor Way in Royton

Paramedics and an air ambulance attended and treated the driver of the Peugeot, Mrs Smedley, 53, for her injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene around 30 minutes later. Two police officers also received treatment for injuries sustained in the collision

Following the incident The Independent Office for Police Conduct(IOPC) announced that conducting a criminal investigation into the actions of PC Mark Burrows over potential offences of causing death by dangerous driving and causing death by careless driving.

He will appear at Warrington Magistrates Court

Assistant Chief Constable Chris Sykes said: “We are aware of the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision to charge an officer from our Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit with death by dangerous driving.

“We have cooperated with the Independent Office for Police Conduct’s investigation throughout.

“The officer continues to receive the support of GMP and the GMP Federation.”
