The former Rochdale midfielder Joe Thompson has died at the age of 36.
He was diagnosed with cancer for a third time in April last year, five years after he retired from playing.
He passed away peacefully yesterday with his family by his side.
The club said
We’re devastated to learn of the passing of Dale legend, Joe Thompson.Our thoughts are with Joe’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.
Rochdale fans said in a statement on social media said:
Joe Thompson gave us memories to last a lifetime. Truly an inspirational person, a fighter and a hero. Life can be so cruel at times.
In a further statement, his family said: “The world will not be the same without his contagious energy.”
