The former Greater Manchester MP Andrew Bennett has died

represented Stockport North from Feb 1974-83 and Denton & Reddish from 1983-2005,

He served as Shadow Education spokesman between 1983-88 as well as being in a number of committees.

When Labour returned to power in 1997 he became one of the most persistently rebellious members voting against the government on issues such as NATS privatisation and the right to trial by jury in 1997 parliament, and against foundation hospitals and tuition fees

Writing on X the man who replaced him as MP Andrew Gywnne described him as

“ a principled Socialist, mentor, a great MP and a friend.
