Hot on the heels of his takeover of Houde of Fraser, Sports Direct Chief has one embarked on a bid to take over ailing Debenhams.

The Company already ownes a near 30% stake in the retailer and now is considering a £61.4m bid to take full control with the proviso that Ashley becomes its chief executive.

Debenhams, hit by the crisis on the high street, is currently trying to raise up to £200m from existing lenders.

The bid from Ashley’s group is almost double the current share price.

Sports Direct deputy chief financial officer Chris Wootton said shareholders were “sick and tired of being ignored, cast aside and trampled underfoot by the lenders of Debenhams”.

The sports retailer is continuing with plans to force an emergency general meeting in May to try to oust all but one of the directors on Debenham’s board.
