Etherow Country Park will benefit from the investment after Stockport Council rubber-stamped the plans for the estate.

The park lies at the heart of the Etherow/Goyt Valley and was one of Britain’s first country parks.

It’s one of the most widely visited parks in Stockport with more than 240 acres of greenspace, offering a wide variety of plants and wildlife.

The park is home to more than 200 species of plants and more than 100 species of birds and is a popular spot for sailing, motor boating and angling.

The work taking place, which complies with the requirements of the Reservoirs Act 1975, will include inspecting bridges and structures and repairing elements of the council-owned reservoir.

Vegetation will be tidied up, and some vegetation may need to be removed as part of the process, but will be reinstated where possible.

As part of this work, some areas of the park may be closed to the public while workmen carry out the maintenance.

Cllr Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services, said: “I know how much our residents love Etherow Country Park and this programme of maintenance will ensure that future generations also enjoy everything that it has to offer.

“While the work takes place there may be areas of the park that are blocked off, and I would ask residents to respect those closures to ensure our teams can carry the work out safely.

“This work needs to happen, and I would like to thank residents for their patience while our teams are on site.”

A large amount of the programme of works will impact the river, reservoir, and other watercourses and as a result of this, the works are expected to be complete by early 2026.
The work will be carried out by council contractors with the Environment Agency supervising.
