A team of 40 runners, of varying abilities, from Greater Manchester charity Down’s Syndrome Manchester will take part in the Great Manchester Run on 31 May, raising vital funds and awareness for people with Down’s syndrome and their families across the region.
In a milestone moment for the charity, this year’s team includes ten members with Down’s syndrome, each stepping out of their comfort zone to take on the challenge alongside parents, carers, volunteers and corporate supporters.
Inspired by their friend Joseph Adams, who took on an incredible ten 10k runs in 2024, and Thomas Derricott, who did his first 10k in 2025, the group have committed to take on this challenge together, cheering each other on along the way.
The charity hopes to raise over £20,000 through the event, helping to continue providing essential services, support networks and opportunities for families throughout Greater Manchester.
Jillian, mum to twins, Harry and Thomas aged 24, said:
“Harry and Thomas, along with their friends who are taking part, have been training by doing lots of walking and taking part in our local Park Run each week. They’ve also joined the local gym to help them get fitter in time for the event.
We as a family have benefitted greatly over the years from being members of Down’s Syndrome Manchester. The charity has offered so much support, connection and understanding, as well as training, educational sessions, age-appropriate activities, and social events. We are extremely grateful to have had their support since my twins were born in 2001.
We are proud to raise funds for Down’s Syndrome Manchester, so that they can continue to provide vital support, advice and community events for individuals and families in Greater Manchester with Down’s syndrome.”
Harry, who’s excited to be taking part for the first time, described his motivation:
“I have been inspired by my twin brother, Thomas, who ran the Manchester 10K for the first time last year. I was there to watch and support him and decided I wanted to do it this year.
I am raising money for Down’s Syndrome Manchester, a charity which we have both been a part of since we were toddlers.”
Esther Whitaker, CEO of Down’s Syndrome Manchester said:
“We are incredibly proud of every member of our team. For many of our members with Down’s syndrome, taking part in the Great Manchester Run, at their own pace, is a huge personal achievement. Their determination and courage perfectly reflect what our charity is all about – creating opportunities, building confidence and challenging perceptions. With the right support, and with positive a shift in societal attitudes, there really are no limits to what people can achieve.”
The charity is encouraging local people and businesses to show their support by donating, cheering the runners on, or helping to spread awareness of the campaign.
