The Doomsday Clock is now set to 89 seconds, the closest to midnight it has ever been after being at 90 seconds over the last year

The Doomsday Clock is a project of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists featuring a clock face where midnight represents atomic Armageddon

The move means that Humanity stands closer to catastrophe than at any moment in its history.

Today’s Clock setting will have considered ‘multiple global threats’ including ‘the proliferation of nuclear weapons, disruptive technologies like artificial intelligence, the Russia-Ukraine war, Israel-Hamas war, Israel-Hezbollah conflict, bio-threats and the continued climate crisis’.

“In setting the Clock one second closer to midnight, we send a stark signal: Because the world is already perilously close to the precipice, a move of even a single second should be taken as an indication of extreme danger and an unmistakable warning that every second of delay in reversing course increases the probability of global disaster,” The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists warn
