The Governmemt has confirmed that Digital driving licences will be introduced this year as part of new government app

The new app will include a wallet to store digital versions of government-issued documents which will begin with a veteran card and then a pilot of driving licences later this year

Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said that by the end of 2027, the Government hoped to have a range of documents available inside the wallet, including DBS checks and every other credential issued by the government.

The technology will make use of security features that are built into modern smart phones, including facial recognition checks similar to those used when people pay using a digital bank card. It means that digital documents will be more secure, even if a device is lost.

Traditional physical documents will remain available for those who opt not to use the digital approach.
