Changes could soon be made at a Manchester junction after significant concerns were raised about its safety.

The junction of Alan Turing Way and Ashton Old Road in East Manchester has seen a number of serious incidents take place. Since 2018 there has sadly been one cyclist fatality, as well as two other people seriously injured and several more with minor injuries. This also does not account for incidents which may have not been reported.

To make the junction safer for cyclists, pedestrians and road users the Council is preparing to consult on what its future layout could be, which would see a protected junction implemented, providing a segregated lane for cyclists as well as improving safety for all road users.

Given the huge levels of investment and development taking place in East Manchester currently, it is important that infrastructure is put in place that can manage the expected increase in footfall. The opening of the Co-op Live Area – a 23,000 capacity venue – the establishment of the National Rugby League Centre and a potential expansion of the Etihad Stadium are just some of the exciting developments planned for this area.

Furthermore, in line with the Council’s ambition to improve air quality and increase the number of people using active travel, making it easier for people to walk, wheel or cycle is a key part of realising that ambition.

Ahead of this work, which could begin in 2024, residents and businesses are to be consulted so that their views on any proposed changes can be heard.

The consultation can be carried out by visiting the Council’s website at www.manchester.gov.uk/consutations,emailing alanturingway@manchester.gov.uk or writing to the Council at Alan Turing Way Project, Highways Service, Town Hall Extension, Albert Square, Manchester, M60 2LA.

An online public meeting will also take place on Wednesday, 21 February, 2024 between 6.30-7.30pm. For details and an invitational Teams link, please email alanturingway@manchester.gov.uk

An in-person drop-in session will also take place on Thursday, 22 February, between 4-7pm at the Beswick Library, Grey Mare Lane, M11 3DS.
