The numbers also show that the scale deaths from all causes for this time of year, 18,516 are the biggest total for that week recorded in modern times with one third of those related to Covid.

The total coronavirus death toll is 40% higher for that week than hospital death numbers suggested. The ONS figures show 12,516 people had died from Covid-19 by April 10th, a figure higher than 8,937 hospital deaths reported by Department of Health that same day.
